AEMT Course

The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system.

HYBRID COURSE DESCRIPTION

Louisiana Firefighters Foundation, in partnership with Advanced Rescue Education Solutions (ARES) will conduct this Advanced EMT course.  

The Advanced EMT (AEMT) has training in specific aspects of advanced life support (ALS) as found in the NHTSA 2009 National EMS Education Standards including intravenous (IV) therapy, certain types of advanced airway management and assisting with administration of certain medications. This course is approved by the National Registry of EMTs and the states of Mississippi and Louisiana. The student must also complete hospital clinical and ambulance field patient care in which student must meet set numbers of clinical skills objectives such as medication administrations, successful IV starts, ventilations, assessment and treatment plans for patients with various medical conditions, assessments on pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and documented patient transports as the “team leader”. In addition to meeting psychomotor and cognitive requirements, students will also be graded (as pass/ fail) on the “affective” learning domain as it relates to student’s timeliness, preparedness, and behavior. After successful course completion, students will be allowed to sit for the NREMT Certification Exam.

Prerequisites:

In order for a participant to be accepted in this specialized course he/she must fulfill the following:

  1. Must be a current Louisiana or Mississippi state licensed EMT.
  2. Must provide immunization status with documentation of immunization or declination form stating refusal to take immunization.
  3. T.B. testing within last 6 months.
  4. Free from communicable disease.
  5. Must complete a federal background check.
  6. May not have physical or psychological dependence to any substance other than those recognized as therapeutic treatments for valid medical conditions for which they are currently under the care of a physician.
  7. Proof of health insurance is required. 
  8. Self-Paid, 10-Panel Drug Screen to be completed at clinic of your choosing prior to Orientation. (To be completed no earlier than 30 Days of the start of the course.)

This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.
