AEMT Course

The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Course is a 17 week / 250-hour course consisting of online didactic coursework, skills labs, and field clinical rotations. This course adheres to the 2009 NHTSA National EMS Education Standards and is approved by the LA Bureau of EMS. The AEMT Course is designed to add knowledge and skills in specific aspects of ALS to providers who have been trained at the EMT level and have experience in providing emergency care. Additional skills included in the AEMT’s Scope of Practice include IV Therapy, use of supraglottic airways (approved in LA as an EMT skill, and the knowledge and skills necessary to administer a limited number of medications. In the state of LA AEMTs are also allowed to interpret basic ECG rhythms and to perform manual defibrillation

Students will complete most of their assignments online and will be required to attend 1 skills day during week 5 of the course to train on IVs and medication administration. Once that is complete the student will participate in 6 12-hour field/hospital clinical rotations, and a 2-week-long in person session during the 16th and 17th week where a course review is provided, the final exam is administered, and skills / scenario practice is conducted to prepare the student for the NREMT exam and real-world application of knowledge and skills learned.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.
